It's just one sentence that gets me moving...

I had my performance review recently.. and guess what, even though i done a fanastic job, working late, shouldering more responsibilities and did a little boot-licking.. I was skipped for promotion and salary review by my Boss's boss.. (SHITTTT....) "Unless you belong to the Sales or Operations team.. otherwise you are just any other employee who is replaceable..." The next morning, i sent out a dozen of my resume.

It’s wonderful how skilled upper management is in building up one’s self worth ;-)

Actually, everybody is replaceable – don’t be fooled by the nice smiles and friendly pats on the back.

A company will treat you well as long as you are an asset to them. Once you are a liability, they will let you go.

At my previous company, the GM once said that if the programmers didn’t work harder he would fire us and replace us. He had started the company with nothing and would start from scratch again if he had to.

Again, we would get those inspiring pep talks after a project deadline was missed (an unreasonable deadline BTW) of how betrayed he felt by our failure.

My favourite was the last engineering manager they hired (he turned over most of the programmers staff in less than a year). He was a British fellow who seemed to have no grasp of the English language. He would say things and then deny having said them (despite there being a dozen witnesses). His usage of words was also extremely idiosyncratic.

Anyway, my favourite pep talk from him went like this: “We’re being sued by an ex-employee for not paying overtime. I normally expect you to work 50-60 hours per week minimum, more if necessary. You are not being paid more than the average person on the street because you are better. You are being paid more because you are expected to work more.”

Of course, he seems to forget that the average person on the street does not have our skills or knowledge – which is what we are being paid for. I left the job (with 2 weeks notice) – apparently this hurt him very much. He said he expected at least 6 months notice from me (I was the most senior developer left and responsible for the majority of the code base). I just quit, no job in hand – of course, this was during the High Tech boom, when companies couldn’t find enough programmers. I found a new job in about 7 weeks for 20% more pay and less stressful environment.

But … now I am bored and looking for what my future will hold.

Now, not all bosses are miserable. I once had a really good boss. He took care of his employees first and them himself (we actually earned more than him and eventually he went out of business). He worked hard, 7 days a weeks for 15 years before going bankrupt. I didn’t have a great salary – just $8 per hour. He used to encourage me to study and even used to give me paid time off to pursue my University courses – I worked 4 days, but he paid me for 5.

Take care.
